What I’m Listening To – April 2010
Towards the end of April I was finally able to get my hands on some new music! I had a lot of catching up to do. In fact, I still have 8 albums I didn’t get to. Also in April, I got to see Band of Horses!! One of my favorite bands of all time. Their new album comes out May 18th, so stay tuned for that.
Jónsi – Go First solo project from Jon Thor Birgisson of Sigur Rós. If you like Sigur Rós, then you will probably like Jónsi. It’s a little more poppy and the songs are all under 5 minutes. The first couple days I listened to this CD I could not wait to get back into my car to hear more. It was that good!
MGMT – Congratulations When I heard the first single, “Flash Delirium”, I wasn’t sure what to expect on MGMT’s sophomore album. I was pleasantly surprised. This was definitely a well thought out album as opposed to a collection of singles like the first album. Congratulations has a bit of a Pink Floyd feel, which made the snobby hipsters criticize them, like they did Vampire Weekend. It got them on to SNL though!
Frightened Rabbit – The Winter of Mixed Drinks In 2008 a friend called my radio show and requested a song off of Midnight Organ Fight. It was in the new section but I had over looked it. I immediately took a shine to these Scotsmen, although they did curse a lot. The Winter of Mixed Drinks is good follow-up. They start out strong with “Things” and keep that energy throughout.
Asobi Seksu – ReWolf Sometimes I will pick up a CD at the station for no reason other than the interesting sounding name. Such was the case with Citrus in 2006. Based out of NY, Asobi Seksu features a lead female vocalist who sings in both English and Japanese. ReWolf is more mellow then Citrus and the sound is much more developed.
Yeasayer – Odd Blood It took me a couple of months of thinking about this band before I decided to burn this CD. From what I saw on Pitchfork, they seemed so weird. I’m glad I gave a chance though. It’s really good, and not weird at all.
Local Natives - Gorilla Manor I heard “Airplanes” on WPRK and really wanted to hear the rest of their album. This is their first album and it was actually recorded in 2008. I’m hoping they evolve and put out an even better sophomore album.
The Ruby Suns – Fight Softly Like Local Natives, I heard a song from The Ruby Suns and wanted to hear more. Although, I can’t think of which song it was that got my attention now. I guess that means the rest of the album just wasn’t as good as the single. They aren’t bad, just some basic indie rock songs.
